During my visit to the General State Archives (GAK) in Sparta in July 2014, I obtained pages of the Mitroon Arrenon (Male Registers) for the village of Agios Ioannis, Sparta. The records begin in 1844. This village is the birthplace of three of my four grandparents (Papagiannakos, Kostakos, Aridas/Michalakakos). Almost every page had surnames of my grandparents’ families, or those who married into my family.
The staff at the GAK in Sparta: Pepi Gavala (Archivist), Maria Stellakou, and Michalis Sovolos. The email address is: mail@gak.lak.sch.gr.
The mailing address is:

My Yiayia was from St. Johns. She was born around 1886. Her mother was Apostolakis. Her dad was Xeroulis.
Hi there I am trying to locate any information on my husband’s great grandfather his name was Polychronis Trouposkiadis and was from Vamvakou in Sparta. Please could you advise how I would go about finding information?
Many thanks
Hello,
My father is Anastasios Laskaris. His father was William Laskaris who married my grandmother Antonia Mavromichalis. My grandfather’s father was also Anastasios Laskaris. Any information on either of the family trees (Laskaris and/or Mavromichalis) would be most appreciative.
My great grandparents were Thomas Petrakos who married (Margaretha Mehas) probably in late 1800’s. Do you have any information on them?
Hi Kay, Can you tell me which village and region they are from? Records are kept by locality, and we do need to have that information in order to proceed. Thank you!
Hi Kay, Do you know which villages they are from? I personally do not have those names in my family, but if we know the village, I may be of help 🙂
Stumbled here while looking for information on my great grandfathers family. His name was George Panagiotopoulos and he was from the Sparta area (b. 1895). I’ve seen his town listed as “Ageon” and believe his parents were named Felmios and Basiki. I see his last name on your list, and was wondering if you might be able to point me in the right direction to search for his parents and family, since sadly I don’t speak Greek!
Hi Alexis, Thank you for writing. I have seen the Panagiotopoulos name in records around Sparta. I am wondering about the name of the town as you spelled it. There is an Aigio, but that is way north near Patras. Near Sparta, there is Anogeia, Arna, Agoriani, Alevrou, Amykles, Afisi, Agrianoi. Where did you see his town listed as Ageon, as it may have been spelled incorrectly. Please email me at spartanroots1 at gmail.com. Carol
Thank you! My friend has family roots here and I see his name on your list — Kachrimanis.
Allison
That is exciting! If he is interested in learning more about his family, the General Archives of Greece, Sparta Office, can help.
MY Great Grandparents were Kakaletris family any information would be very much appreciated!
Hi Terry – the Kakaletris family is large and well-known in the Sparta area. I will send you an email with more information. Thank you for writing.
Thank you Im very excited, due to civil wars, thought documents did not exist
My family ancestors are listed here – Petrakos
That is exciting! Thank you for writing.
My husband’s maternal grandfather was from Sparta, Greece. When he & his brother went through Ellis Island their names were spelled Krettecos and Critticos. I have been trying to trace my husband’s roots for years.
I’m looking for my paternal grandfather, I believe he has passed away but he has other children ( my aunts and uncles) that Ive never known.. I dont think they even know I exist. Last Name Archakos
